Do you have a passcode lock on your smartphone?

I read something the other day that made me feel incredibly dumb.  It was a short article on five ways to secure your mobile phone.  The most obvious one was to always have the passcode lock switched on. Why? If you lose your phone the person who finds it will be able to access your email, contacts, facebook, twitter and all other linked accounts and possibly play hell with your life.  Imagine the trauma if you had to shut down all your accounts and start again?

I had used the passcode lock on my old phone but out of sheer laziness I had never bothered to set it on my new phone.  It was soooo much easier to just swipe instead of entering that pesky 4 digit code.  Boy did I feel dumb…..

Passcode is now duly switched on.

Apparently 62% of smartphone users do not use password protection on their smartphones (Javelin Strategy & Research).

How about you, are you part of the 62%? Or do you have your phone fully secured? Any other tips for securing a phone?

  1. I read this and had the same ahuh moment. I never thought about people accessing these things, scary. I mentioned it to my husband and he said that having this would mean me permanently locked out of my phone. Until little miss 2 knows her numbers this can’t happen for me, so I will just have to risk it. We have had several friends kids lock them out. Thanks for the eye opener.

    1. I know – such an obvious one too! Another tip was to make sure you get all the OS upgrades, which I also never do as I don’t sync with iTunes – apple use these updates to patch any security flaws…..it’s on the “to do” list 🙂

  2. Hmmm, my husb keeps telling me to do this but I’m so lazy and hate having to swipe or type it every time I want to get into my phone… Actually, perhaps that’s telling me I need to stop looking at my phone incessantly! You’re so right, it would be so devastating if someone got hold of it and I had to change everything. I’m going to do it tonight…!

  3. ahhhh, the passcode lock. Yes definitely have it set however as already mentioned, I’m constantly grabbing the phone of my 2yo just before she tries to enter her version of my code for the last time…

  4. I was thinking about this the other day while playing with my tablet. I haven’t done it on my phone yet, but the tablet is just as big a risk, if someone were to steal it they would have access to SO MUCH! *sigh* better start locking things i think!

  5. Hi superb blog! Does running a blog such as this require a
large amount of work? I have no expertise in coding however I had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future.
Anyway, if you have any suggestions or techniques for new blog owners please share.
I know this is off subject but I just had to ask. Many thanks!
